| Although , the Basil
and Elise Goulandris Foundation is mainly concerned with cultural
events, it is also active in the field of social welfare. It undertook
the construction and outfitting of a new pavilion for the elderly
intended for the non-profit institution “Estia Athinon”, which was
built within the grounds of the Old People’s Home of the Athens Charitable
Society and was inaugurated on the 1st of June 1989. The Foundation
also undertook to maintain and renovate the building every ten years.
This new complex of 35 luxurious apartments for wealthy elderly
people was designed by architect Christos Kontovounisios. The residents
are under the constant medical surveillance of highly trained staff
and have at their disposal a fully equipped physiotherapy room permanently
attended by a trained physiotherapist. In addition, “Estia Athinon”
provides comfortable recreation rooms, pleasant surroundings, and
healthy diet for the elderly.
